January Scrap Ratio At 13.6% For Japanese LD Converter Feed
Japan's steel industry set the blending ratio of ferrous scrap to pig iron at 13.6% for LD converter feed in January 2011, the same as the month before, according to a survey by the Japan Ferrous Raw Materials Association.

Ferrous scrap consumption for LD converter feed totaled 1,147,000 tons in January 2011, up 79,000 tons or 7.4% from a month ago, when it hit a monthly level of 1,140,000 tons for the first time in four months.

Meanwhile, the Japanese steel industry's ferrous scrap consumption for electric furnace operations totaled 2,057,000 tons in January 2011, down 92,000 tons or 4.3% from a month ago, indicating a decrease for two consecutive months. In the month under review, the blending ratio of ferrous scrap to pig iron for electric furnace feed stood at 98.2%, down from 98.4% in the previous month.
