China's February Scrap Imports Total 249,000 Tons
China's ferrous scrap imports totaled 249,000 tons in February 2011, down 46.3% from a year ago, indicating a low level for the first time in two years and four months since October 2008, according to Chinese trade statistics made available in Tokyo.

Of the total imports, Japan supplied the largest quantity of 166,000 tons, down 13.9% from a year ago; and the USA the second largest of 61,000 tons, down 54.2%.

In January-February 2011, China's ferrous scrap imports totaled 708,000 tons, down 34.2% from the same period of 2010, translating into an annualized 4,250,000 tons.

In the breakdown by main sources, Japan ranked first at 382,000 tons or 53.9% of the total, down 13.7% from the corresponding period of 2010; and the USA second at 244,000 tons or 34.5%, down 19.8%. As a result, the two nations together accounted for 88.4% of the total.
