= To two indigenous joint ventures =
Rio Tinto announced on Aug 22 that it awarded two indigenous joint venture contracts worth more than A$184 million at the Hope Downs 4 mine site in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The contracts have been awarded to joint venture Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd and the West Australian indigenous contractor Ngarda Civil and Mining Pty Ltd for A$104 million in earthworks. This follows the other award of a joint venture contract between Aboriginal contractor Pilbara Logistics Pty Ltd and Cimeco for construction of the mine building and support facilities, valued at more than A$80 million.

Sam Walsh, Rio Tinto chief executive, Iron Ore and Australia said, "These latest two contracts are another step towards the successful implementation of our goal to achieve 333Mtpa capacity in the Pilbara in 2015."

The Hope Downs 4 mine site is situated approximately 200km east of Tom Price, and is developed by a 50:50 unincorporated joint venture between Rio Tinto and Hope Downs Iron Ore. The project is expected to have an annual production capacity of 15 million tonnes.
