Outotec To Build FeCr Plant In China For Mintal Group
= 300,000 tons per year plant in Inner Mongolia =
Finland's Outotec Oyj. has announced on September 26 (Finland time) that it agreed with Mintal Group Co., Limited on constructing a new plant whose annual capacity is 300,000 tons of ferrochrome, and on licensing of technology regarding ferrochrome smelting as well as chrome ore pelletization by steel-belt sintering.

The agreement was made to realize Mintal's plan to build a large-scale ferrochrome plant in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, in which Outotec is to be engaged in construction/engineering of two 69MVA electric furnaces and one sintering plant of 700,000 tons/year capacity, and also in licencing of relevant technologies. The plant is scheduled to start production in 2013.

Outotec, an affiliated company of a big European stainless steel mill in Europe, Outokumpu, has been of worldwide reputation in constructing and engineering of ferrochrome producing plants in South African and in Kazakhstan. The ferrochrome producers in those countries chose Outotec as a constructing/engineering partner and have actually operated the ferrochrome plants successfully so far.

This is Outotec's first time to license this kind of technology to China, which is one of the big producing countries of ferrochrome, of which annual production is more or less 1 million tons. One of the background factors of the agreement this time must be that Outotec's advanced technology is considered not only to offer production of high efficiency but also to meet higher environmental standards which could be enforced in the near future in China, so that Mintal can organize all-around technologies for stress-free operations. No details about the contract value has been disclosed.
