Japan's Steel Export/Import In Feb. Was 3,193,000 Tons, Down 13.3% From A Year Earlier
The Ministry of Finance of Japan released on 22nd statistics on steel export and import (preliminary) in February. According to this, export quantity in February was 3,193 thousand tons, down 16.1% from the same month last year, and up 8.5% from the previous month. Export amount in yen in February was 276 billion 981 million, down 12.6% from the same month last year. While, import quantity in February was 580.6 thousand tons, up 6.9% from the same month last year, and down 17.2% from the previous month for 4 months in a row.

By destination of export in February, export to Asia was 2,469 thousand tons, down 16.3% from the same month last year. Out of these, that to China was 520 thousand tons, down 14.3% ditto, to the Asian NIEs 997 thousand tons, down 16.9% ditto, and to ASEAN 848 thousand tons, also down 12.4% ditto which all showed double-digit decrease.

By destination to the remote countries/areas, export to Middle East was 145 thousand tons, down 5.2% ditto, to Russia 23 thousand tons, down 29.9% ditto, to EU 37 thousand tons, largely down 53.6% ditto, and to the USA 233 thousand tons, up 95.8% ditto. It was since March, 2011 (247 thousand tons) that export to the USA exceeded 200 thousand tons.

While, by country/area of import in February, import from China was 94 thousand tons, up 38.1% from the same month last year and down 23.8% from the previous month. That from the Asian NIEs was 369 thousand tons, up 19.5% ditto and down 12.6% ditto. That from ASEAN was 8.8 thousand tons, down 39.1% from the same month last year, from the EU 9.7 thousand tons, down 5.4% ditto, from USA 1.34 thousand tons, up 10.6% ditto, and from Russia 17.6 thousand tons, down 34.1% ditto.
