According to trade statistics for 2011 announced by Statistics New Zealand, export volume of iron ore (iron sand) totaled 233,400 tonnes in 2011. The country exported 116,700 tonnes each to both China and Japan. Export price (FOB Taharoa) was $23.45 per tonne, decreasing by $3.48 (12.9%) from the previous year ($26.93).|
Taharoa iron sand is mined in North Island, operated and sold by New Zealand Steel, a subsidiary of BlueScope Steel. Iron sand is mainly used for hearth bottom protectant. In Japan, Kobe Steel is importing it continuously.
