According to the statistics released by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan's nickel production in May 2012 as well as during the first five months of 2012 were as per the tables attached hereto. The tables show that production (of contained nickel) during May was, <> nickel metal: 3,037 tons (up 3.9% from May 2011), and <> ferronickel: 5,475 tons (up 2.26 times). The nickel content in ferronickel was calculated from ferronickel's output during May in material weight i.e. 27,375 tons.|
Production during the first five months of 2012 was, <> nickel metal: 17,543 tons, marginally up 0.2% from the same period of 2011, and <> ferronickel: 30,076 tons, up 43.9% from the same period of 2011.
Due to the Earthquake/Tsunami of March 11, 2011 production of ferronickel at Hachinohe smelter of Pacific Metals during the Q2 (April - June) 2011 dramatically dropped but the plant made a full recovery in January 2012, contributing to the sharp increase in the ferronickel output during the first five months of 2012 vs. the same period in 2011.
