Japan Ferrochrome Demand/Supply For 9 Months of 2012
= High-carbon consumption down reflecting SUS production cut =
Demand and supply of ferrochrome in Japan during the first nine months (January - September) of 2012 were as per the table attached hereto. The data show that consumption of high-carbon ferrochrome was 504,693 tons, down 3.7% from the same period of 2011, and the same of low-carbon ferrochrome was 35,161 tons, up 1.3%.

Production of crude special steel during the 9 months was 18.701 million tons, up 3.9% from the same period of 2011. However the production of stainless steel during the 9 months of 2012 was 2.149 million tons, down 5.5% from the same period of 2011. It is safe to say that the drop in consumption of high-carbon ferrochrome was due to the cut in production of stainless steel. The production of stainless steel during the Q3 (July - September) of 2012 was 716,000 tons, down 5.5% from the same quarter of 2011, showing no sign of recovery yet.

Imports of high-carbon ferrochrome during the first nine months of 2012 were 517,783 tons, down 10.0% from the same period of 2011, also reflecting the production cut of stainless steel. Imports of low-carbon stainless steel were 37,249 tons, down 10.9%.
