|BHP Billiton March 2013 Quarter Production Summary|
|= Nickel West smelter/refinery returned to full capacity after maintenance =|
BHP Billiton's production summary for March 2013 quarter was released on April 17. |
Production details of manganese ore, manganese-group ferroalloys, nickel and molybdenum are as per the table attached hereto. The production figures in this article and the attached table all represent saleable production.
Manganese in the ore produced during the quarter was 2.008 million tons, down 2% from the same quarter of 2012 and down 5% from the preceding quarter. The ore production during the nine-month period ended March 31, 2013 was a record high thanks to the substantial improvement in plant availability at GEMCO (Australia).
Manganese-group ferroalloys production during the quarter was 143,000 tons, up 4% from the same quarter of 2012 and down 7% from the preceding quarter. The alloy production during the nine-month period ended March 31, 2013 largely decreased compared to the nine-month period between July 2011 and March 2012 due to the permanent shutdown at the silicomanganese producer in South Africa, Metalloys in January 2012.
Nickel production during the quarter was 42,100 tons, up 1% from the same quarter of 2012 and up 21% from the preceding quarter. The sharp rise in output from the preceding quarter is attributable to Nickel West's return to full capacity operation after the maintenance check conducted in the preceding quarter.
Molybdenum production in concentrates, only at Antamina (Peru), during the quarter was 321 tons, down 38% from the same quarter of 2012 and down 22% from the preceding quarter.
