KIOCL Requests Karnataka Government to Allocate Iron Mines
It was reported on Jul 2 that the employees' union of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL) has requested Karnataka State Government to allocate iron ore mines to the company. The Government had allocated iron ore mines at Ramanadurga in Bellary to KIOCL. However, the company could not maintain the operations of the mines due to the Supreme Court order. Currently, KIOCL procures iron ore in Chhattisgarh State and carries it to its 3.5 Mtpa pellet plant in Mangalore as the raw materials. This results in very high transportation cost for the company.

KIOCL has no captive mine since the company stopped mining in January 2006. Accordingly, the employees' union appealed for the allocation of iron ore mines in a nearby state, Karnataka to the State Government, which is unprecedented.
