South African Kumba Iron Ore set a new record for single blast at its Kolomela mine in Postmasburg on August 4th. The blast, in the Kapstevel operational area, took place under strict safety supervision and free up more than two million tonnes of waste material for removal. About 940 tonnes of explosives was set off in a timed sequence over 3.5 seconds. The blast area covered 4.6 hectares.|
Kolomela mine has production capacity of 10 million tones per year. The product type is Direct Shipping Iron Ore (DSO). 5.5 million tonnes was produced in the first half of 2014, up 4% from a year earlier.
