US-based Excelerate Energy has decided not to employ its floating regasification and storage unit (FSRU) into a Puerto Rican LNG project. It had been working toward launching the "Aguirre Offshore Gas Port," an offshore LNG import project in Puerto Rico, together with Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), but requested the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in this November to vacate the authorization on the project.|
Excelerate Energy explained the reason for the cancellation, saying, "As a result of changed circumstances, the Aguirre Offshore GasPort project has been cancelled." In reports to FERC, the Company had written that they appreciated the project's importance, but the financial situation in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Maria were having impact on the project schedule.
The Company received FERC's construction authorization in July 2015. The project had planned to employ Excelerate's one of FSRUs 4 miles offshore Salinas, southern the country and supply LNG as a power generation source via undersea pipelines.
