|Bidding Over 60,000 Tons of UO Pipes to Romania Begins|
Talks and bidding over 60,000 tons of UO steel piles to Romania have begun, which will be used by a local wing of Exxon Mobile in the gas project 'Neptun' at the Black Sea continental shelf. Geographically European manufacturers including German's EUROPIPE are in an advantageous position; however, with no other large-scale projects that use UO pipes in sight, some Asian manufacturers, such as India's WELSPUN, are likely to take part in the process.|
From Japan, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation ("NSSMC") and JFE Steel Corporation ("JFE Steel") have tendered a bid via Sumitomo Corporation and Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc., respectively. The delivery period is considered to begin in the second half of the year.
In terms of UO pipes, no other major cases are currently going on, apart from the 100,000-ton case for Saudi Aramco, for which the tender closing day has already passed. There are some other projects, such as the 200,000-ton case for Australia's Woodside, but no details including the bidding schedule have been available so far. As such, the UO pipe sector seems to have another tough year in 2019, with a particularly bleak outlook for the second half (July-Dec).
This explains the enthusiasm shown by manufacturers from various countries to this Romania case, even though the scale of less than 100,000 tons is relatively small. It will take some more time before the mills that actually tendered a bid become clear. Because the product quality is of particular importance this time due to the usage (for seabed pipelines), there may be a chance for Japanese mills.
